This year, we will witness a major paradigm shift in the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. The protease inhibitors boceprevir and telaprevir — the first of many antiviral drugs that target various steps of the HCV life cycle — are expected to be approved this summer. These drugs have been shown to almost double treatment response rates for HCV-monoinfected patients. However, until CROI 2011, all the reported clinical studies had specifically excluded patients with HIV coinfection, even though these patients have a more pressing need for better treatments and greater potential for drug interactions.
