When prescribing antiretroviral therapy (ART) for acute HIV infection, clinicians tend to recommend protease inhibitors (PIs) rather than nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) because of concerns about transmitted NNRTI resistance. However, new research suggests that efavirenz-based therapy might be a reasonable option for acute HIV infection.
