C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are associated with cardiovascular risk in the general population and with HIV disease progression among infected individuals. As part of the ACTG 5095 trial, investigators evaluated CRP levels in stored serum samples from 196 HIV-infected patients (145 men and 51 women) who achieved durable virologic suppression on first-line AZT/3TC + efavirenz, with or without abacavir.
At baseline, CRP levels did not differ significantly by sex, but at 96 weeks, women had significantly higher levels than men (median, 6.0 vs. 1.6 mg/L).
