Sexual transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) among HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) has been described in Europe, Australia, and the U.S. Now, a similar report from New York City further underscores the importance of testing for HCV in high-risk individuals.
From October 2005 through December 2010, investigators at Mount Sinai Hospital evaluated 74 HIV-positive MSM with recently acquired HCV infection and no reported injection-drug use. Strikingly, 81% were asymptomatic and had had their HCV infection detected solely on the basis of new alanine aminotransferase elevations (median peak level, 665 U/L; range, 72–5291 U/L).
