In 2010, the WHO added four new antiretroviral regimens to its list of recommended first-line therapies: tenofovir + 3TC + nevirapine, tenofovir + 3TC + efavirenz, tenofovir + FTC + nevirapine, and tenofovir + FTC + efavirenz. Now, a systematic review, presented at the 6th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention [Tang M et al. Abstract WEPDB0103], has cast doubt on the efficacy of one of these regimens.
Thirty prospective and retrospective studies were included in the review and provided substantial data to support the efficacy of tenofovir + FTC + nevirapine and tenofovir + 3TC (or FTC) + efavirenz.
