On August 16, 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issued supplemental recommendations regarding the role of rilpivirine in initial HIV treatment. Rilpivirine, a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), was recently approved as a stand-alone product (JW AIDS Clin Care May 27 2011) and is also part of a newly approved one-pill, once-daily fixed-dose combination (JW AIDS Clin Care Aug 15 2011).
In these latest recommendations, efavirenz continues to be the only preferred NNRTI for initial treatment, and rilpivirine is listed as an alternative.
