Our understanding of bone-mineral density (BMD) patterns among HIV-positive individuals has been compromised by the dearth of information about such patterns in HIV-negative members of high-risk groups. Now, researchers have attempted to fill this gap using data from the iPrEx trial, a study of tenofovir pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM).
A total of 210 MSM in San Francisco (age range, 18–60) underwent dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans at screening or entry into the iPrEx trial. Twenty men were found to have low BMD (defined as a Z-score ≤–2.0) at one or more sites, with the lumbar spine being the most common.
