Several reports in the past decade have documented concerning increases in the incidence of HIV infection and syphilis among men who have sex with men (MSM). Two recent studies provide further insight into these trends.
In the first study, researchers described new diagnoses of HIV infection and syphilis in sexually active men aged 18 to 64 who were living in New York City between 2005 and 2008 (n=8345; 5% MSM).
During the study period, new diagnoses of HIV infection increased by 5% among MSM but decreased by 30% among men who have sex with women (MSW).
