Tenofovir and 3TC are among the most frequently used antiretrovirals during pregnancy, but pharmacokinetic data in this setting are limited. Two new studies — one focused on each of the drugs — address this issue.
For the tenofovir study, researchers measured plasma drug levels in 46 HIV-infected women who were at various stages of pregnancy and 156 HIV-infected women who were not pregnant. All the women were taking standard 300-mg doses of tenofovir once daily; among the pregnant women, 85% were also receiving a protease inhibitor (PI), and 12% were receiving a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). A total of 326 measurements were obtained, 1–29 hours after the last tenofovir dose.
