Assessing prognosis in HIV-infected patients is difficult because so many factors are at play. In the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS), investigators have evaluated two different clinical indexes for predicting mortality: a restricted index, which incorporates three standard markers of mortality (age, CD4-cell count, and viral load), and the VACS index, which includes those standard markers as well as six routine measures of end-organ health status (creatinine levels, aspartate and alanine aminotransferase levels, hepatitis C virus [HCV] serostatus, platelet counts, and hemoglobin levels).
