Current U.S. guidelines recommend that all HIV-infected pregnant women receive antiretroviral therapy (ART), preferably AZT/3TC + lopinavir/ritonavir. Concern exists, however, about a possible association between boosted protease inhibitors (PIs) and increased risk for prematurity. In the present study, researchers reviewed data from 13,271 pregnancies among HIV-infected women at 90 centers in France between 1990 and 2009. Prematurity was defined as delivery before 37 weeks' gestation.
The proportion of births that were premature in this cohort increased significantly during the study period — from 9.2% in 1990–1993 to 14.3% in 2005–2009 — and was markedly higher than that seen in the general population (5.8% in 2005–2009). In a multivariate…
