HIV-positive individuals are at increased risk for a number of conditions that are typically associated with aging, such as cardiovascular disease and neurocognitive decline, most likely because of increased immune activation and inflammation. Several studies have indicated that young HIV-positive individuals exhibit immunologic changes similar to those typically seen in elders and that these changes are not completely reversible with antiretroviral therapy (ART).
