Despite a rapidly emerging body of data on bone health in HIV-infected patients, the contributions of individual antiretrovirals to fracture risk remain unclear.
In this claims-based, nested case-control analysis, researchers evaluated data from 2477 HIV-infected individuals who had low-impact or nontraumatic incident fractures between 1997 and 2008 and 9144 HIV-infected individuals (matched for age and sex) who did not have fractures. They evaluated the overall effect of antiretroviral therapy (ART), the effect of specific drug classes, and finally, the effect of individual antiretrovirals. The study was partially supported by the maker of abacavir.
