CD4-cell count and CD4 percentage are both important prognostic markers in HIV-infected patients and are routinely used to stage disease, assess the risk for disease progression or mortality, and evaluate the need for treatment initiation. In a previous study of HIV-uninfected adults, advanced liver disease was associated with CD4 discordance — specifically, a low CD4-cell count despite a relatively well-preserved CD4 percentage. Two recent studies describe the prevalence and correlates of CD4 discordance among patients with HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection.
