Antiretroviral Therapy Improves Neurological Function in Resource-Limited Settings

Three different ART regimens each improved neurological and neuropsychological outcomes in a trial that spanned seven countries on three continents.

In a substudy of a randomized trial, researchers assessed the neurological and neuropsychological effects of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) in three African, two Asian, and two South American countries. In all, 860 treatment-naive HIV-infected participants (median age, 34; 53% women; median CD4 count, 172 cells/mm³; median viral load, 5.0 log copies/mL) had been randomized to one of three regimens:

AZT/3TC + efavirenz
FTC + ddI + atazanavir
tenofovir/FTC + efavirenz
