Previous studies from the U.S. have shown lower rates of adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among black patients than white patients, but the underlying reasons for this disparity are unclear. In the present study, researchers explored associations between race/ethnicity and adherence, taking into account possible contributing factors such as depression and substance abuse. Adherence was measured using electronic monitoring of pill-bottle caps.
The study involved 1809 HIV-infected adults at 14 sites across the U.S.; 53% were black, 34% white, and 14% Latino. Only 11% of study participants had a college degree, and 59% had an annual income <$10,000; 41% of participants were heterosexual, 33% homosexual, and 14% bisexual. Substance use …
