In July 2012, the FDA approved tenofovir/FTC (Truvada) for use as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in HIV-negative individuals at high risk for acquiring HIV from sexual activity (JW AIDS Clin Care Jul 23 2012). The CDC has now issued a set of interim guidelines for prescribing the drug to heterosexual adults. (The interim PrEP guidance issued in 2011 focused on men who have sex with men [MSM].) The new guidance focuses specifically on the issue of pregnancy among women considering long-term PrEP with tenofovir/FTC.
The guidelines remind clinicians that tenofovir/FTC has been used in pregnant women to prevent perinatal transmission, with no evidence of adverse effects to the fetus. However, the drug is classified as pregnancy risk category “B…
