Some studies suggest that high-dose multivitamins are beneficial for HIV-infected patients who are not receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), but does this benefit extend to patients on ART as well?
More than 3400 patients initiating ART in Tanzania were randomized to receive oral multivitamin supplements (including vitamin B complex, vitamin C, and vitamin E) at either standard doses or high doses. The study was planned for 24 months, but it was stopped early (at a median follow-up of 15 months) because of a higher incidence of alanine aminotransferase elevations in the high-dose group.
