Since 1989, immunization with the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) has been recommended for persons with immunocompromising conditions, including HIV infection. Now, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that HIV-infected adults also receive the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13), which shares 12 serotypes with PPSV23. PCV13 should be given ≥8 weeks before the first dose of PPSV23 or, in individuals with previous PPSV23 vaccination, ≥1 year after PPSV23 administration.
