Combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) is recommended for HIV-infected pregnant women (JW AIDS Clin Care Aug 30 2012). However, some studies have suggested an association between protease inhibitor (PI)-based regimens and preterm birth. In a prior randomized trial (JW AIDS Clin Care Sep 12 2011), pregnant women in Botswana who received such regimens during the third trimester were twice as likely to deliver prematurely as those who received triple-nucleoside ART.
