Previous CROI meetings have been memorable for particular cases that have galvanized interest and dominated press coverage. This year, the world's attention was caught by the report of an infant who received antiretroviral therapy (ART) almost immediately after being born to a woman diagnosed with HIV infection during labor [Persaud D et al. Abstract 48LB]. The child was taken off ART by a caregiver at age 18 months and almost a year later shows no evidence of HIV replication. Much ink has already been spilled (can that happen in cyberspace?) regarding what might have happened (see here and here).
