Progress in Understanding and Addressing the HIV Cascade of Care

Encouraging data were presented at CROI 2013, but many challenges remain.

The HIV cascade of care (JW AIDS Clin Care Dec 22 2011) was addressed in numerous papers and symposia [Sessions 18 and 51] and a themed discussion [Session 31]. One important aspect of HIV cascade-of-care analysis is the need to reach consensus on the definitions used to facilitate comparisons between regions and track the efficacy of cascade-targeted interventions [Greenburg A. Abstract 58 and Hall I. Abstract 165]. Additionally, accurate data on trends in the HIV epidemic are crucial for assessing the treatment-as-prevention strategy. One key data measurement that was highlighted was the calculation of HIV incidence in different populations using a multi-assay algorithm [Laeyendecker O et al. Abstract 164].
