Hepatitis C virus infection has occurred among men who have sex with men since the beginning of the HIV epidemic, with higher rates of infection among those who are HIV-infected.
Recent outbreaks of sexually transmitted hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection primarily among HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) suggest an emerging problem. To determine the transmission dynamics and risk factors for HCV infection among HIV-infected and -uninfected MSM, investigators assessed HCV incidence in 5310 MSM enrolled in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study who were HCV antibody–negative when they entered the study between 1984 and 2003 and were followed through September 2011 for anti-HCV seroconversion.
