Although hospitalized patients with pneumonia often experience cardiac complications, Mycoplasma pneumonia infections have not been associated with substantial risk for cardiac events. Researchers retrospectively analyzed data from 1300 individuals hospitalized with Mycoplasma pneumonia infections at one center in Israel between 2007 and 2024.
In all, 12% of patients had cardiac involvement (17% of adults and 5% of children).
Among adults, in-hospital mortality was 23% and the most common complications were heart failure and arrhythmias.
Patients with perimyocarditis or myocarditis were less likely to have preexisting cardiac conditions.
