Hospital communication is evolving from pagers and phones to asynchronous secure messaging platforms. Although these tools streamline communication, they also introduce risks, such as message overload, frequent task switching, and potential patient safety concerns. Although prior studies suggest that hospitalists can receive more than 130 messages daily, little is known about the content, urgency, and actionability of these communications. Researchers analyzed 2700 Epic secure chat messages (365 conversations; >90% from physicians, nurses, or advanced practice providers) sent during one weekday and one weekend day in 2023 at a large U.S. academic medical center. Messages were coded for urgency, actionability, sentiment, and content.
