Asthma exacerbations during pregnancy are associated with perinatal complications, including preterm birth and low birth weight. Although inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) and beta-agonists are considered safe in pregnancy, patients and clinicians alike might hesitate to continue them. To better understand asthma management and outcomes in pregnancy, researchers in the U.K. analyzed records from roughly 40,000 live births among women with preexisting asthma.
Asthma exacerbations occurred in 10% of pregnant patients, a ≈30% reduction from the prepregnancy rate.
Despite the overall decline, risk for severe exacerbations requiring hospitalization increased, particularly later in pregnancy.
