Invasive infections from drug-resistant bacteria are directly and indirectly linked to high patient mortality, particularly in older patients with frailty and comorbidities. In a retrospective cohort study, researchers examined the utility of a frailty index (FI-Lab) for predicting in-hospital mortality in 182 patients with carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae bacteremia, 48 (26%) of whom died. The frailty score, based on 35 laboratory tests collected within the first 4 days of hospitalization, ranged from 0 to 1, with a higher score indicating greater frailty.
Non-survivors were older than survivors (mean age, 70 vs. 63), with more-severe organ dysfunction at onset of infection and higher frailty scores (0.66 vs. 0.33).
