Etiology of Necrotizing Pneumonia in Children: An Unlikely Frontrunner

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is an important pathogen implicated in community-acquired pneumonia, typically in school-aged children and adults. Recent data show that mycoplasma infections are increasing among hospitalized children with pneumonia, including younger ones.

The authors of this report retrospectively identified pathogens from 365 children (mean age, 7 years) treated for necrotizing pneumonia at a hospital in China from 2019 to 2025. Pathogens were identified by RT-PCR and bacterial culture, as well as next-generation sequencing of bronchial alveolar lavage (BAL) samples for those with initially inconclusive results.
