In many people with acute mpox, the rash and mucosal lesions resolve in a few days or weeks. However, some people have persistent symptoms or signs following infection. To characterize long-term mpox sequelae, investigators performed clinical assessments 11 to 18 months after acute illness in 154 people who were diagnosed with mpox in 2022 and 2023. They also assessed 201 people who were at risk for, but were not diagnosed with, mpox.
Among the participants who had mpox:
45% reported increased depression.
58% had persistent sequelae affecting mucosal and nonmucosal sites. Body locations most likely to be affected were the penis, groin or pelvic regions, arms, and face.
