The association of plant-based diets with slower cognitive decline is well known, but studies in more diverse populations are sparse. Little is also known about the risks and benefits of different types of plant-based diets.
A large, highly diverse cohort (93,000 participants; mean age, 59) based in Hawaii and California had their diets assessed at baseline and over 10 years. Diets were stratified with dietary recall according to three indices: healthful plant-based diet (e.g., whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes), unhealthful plant-based diet (e.g., refined grains, fruit juices, potatoes, added sugars), and overall plant-based diet.
