The mosquito-borne dengue virus has experienced a global resurgence in the past few years, especially in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia. While most cases are mild, and thus often not diagnosed, severe disease with shock can occur, especially in people with a prior episode of dengue.
A new CDC report examined the record-high number of laboratory-documented and probable dengue cases in the U.S. in 2024.
Dengue cases increased 3.5-fold, from an annual average of 828 cases from 2010−2023 to 3798 cases in 2024.
All but 105 cases were travel-related, mostly in Latin America and the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Locally acquired cases were in Florida (N=85), California (18), and Texas (2).
