When epilepsy is misdiagnosed in children, effective treatment can be delayed and unnecessary treatments given, with potential harm and missed opportunities to improve outcomes. In a new study, researchers enrolled nearly 450 children in India undergoing epilepsy evaluation at a tertiary-care pediatric neurology center after referral from various other centers with an epilepsy diagnosis on the basis of clinical assessment. The researchers measured the rate of epilepsy misdiagnosis before referral, as well as the accuracy of the previously validated 10-item AIIMS modified INCLEN diagnostic questionnaire for epilepsy compared with diagnosis by a pediatric neurologist.
