Although Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia is often fatal, only low-quality data currently guide treatment decisions. In 2022, researchers launched the S. aureus Network Adaptive Platform (SNAP), a randomized, open-label, multinational trial designed to answer multiple treatment questions simultaneously. The first two analyses were recently published and involved:
1340 patients with methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) bacteremia who were randomized to cefazolin or an antistaphylococcal penicillin, either flucloxacillin or cloxacillin; infections were most often osteoarticular (32%).
280 patients with penicillin-susceptible S. aureus (PSSA) bacteremia who were randomized to penicillin G or flucloxacillin/cloxacillin ().
