Before 2015, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that parents delay allergenic-food introduction until age 1 to 3 years to prevent food allergy. Unfortunately, this effort had the opposite effect, and now guidelines recommend introducing peanut and egg to all infants between 4 and 6 months of age, followed by regular consumption. To examine the effect of early egg introduction on food allergy prevalence, these researchers in Australia examined data from cross-sectional studies before and after Australian guidelines changed.
The authors compared 5276 infants from a 2007-2011 cohort with 1933 infants from a 2018-2019 cohort.
The median age of egg introduction shifted from 8 to 6 months.
