Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination reduces HPV infections and cervical cancer incidence, but evidence that HPV vaccination reduces deaths is limited. To estimate the effect on mortality in England after the vaccine’s introduction in 2008, researchers compared actual cervical cancer deaths to the number expected without vaccination, using cervical cancer mortality and vaccination-coverage data for women aged 20 to 34 from 2000 through 2024. The first birth cohort eligible for the vaccine in the U.K. was 20 years old in 2010 and 34 years old in 2024.
