Statin Use and Cognitive Function in Postmenopausal Women

Whether statins can cause cognitive problems has been debated for years. The cognitive symptoms reported with statin use resemble those commonly reported with menopause, which raises the question of whether cognitive symptoms among postmenopausal women vary according to statin use (Figure 1). In this study, nearly 1200 healthy postmenopausal women attending routine gynecology check-ups completed a self-report questionnaire on menopausal symptoms as well as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Researchers compared outcomes between those who used statins (≈25%) and those who did not.
