Context

Many studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of nirsevimab in preventing respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)–related hospitalizations in young infants. Given that RSV disease is a risk factor for invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), might RSV immunoprophylaxis also protect against IPD ()?

In a population-based, retrospective study among over 500,000 infants in France, researchers examined hospitalizations related to IPD in those who received nirsevimab before their first birthday (23%) and those who did not (77%). Conjugate pneumococcal vaccination (PCV) is mandatory in France, with high coverage levels (≈90% in this cohort).
