Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an atopic inflammatory disorder of the esophagus that can lead to feeding difficulties and fibrosis. Prevalence in children is estimated at 0.03% overall, but what about in children with asthma?
Researchers in an outpatient asthma clinic used a modified EoE symptom surveillance survey to determine the prevalence of unrecognized EoE among patients aged 3 to 17. A total of 189 families completed the survey, with 80% reporting EoE symptoms “at least sometimes.” Treating allergists then determined which of these children required referral to a gastroenterologist.
