Infections are associated with subsequent neurologic and psychiatric disorders, but little is known about which infections map to which disorders. Using electronic health records (EHRs), researchers compared more than 1 million people hospitalized with infections to similar people hospitalized for other reasons and to the general population. They assessed 14 neurologic and psychiatric outcomes from 1 month to 2 years after hospitalization.
Infections, as a group, were associated with significantly higher risk for most disorders evaluated.
Infectious encephalitis stood out as a risk factor for most outcomes. Meningitis was particularly associated with subsequent cognitive deficits and with epilepsy or seizures.
