In patients without a history of cardiovascular (CV) disease, statins have been shown to reduce CV events, especially in those with elevated baseline risk. However, their safety and effectiveness is debated in healthy older adults — with regard to both prevention of CV events and extending survival free of dementia or physical disability.
To evaluate these outcomes further, researchers identified 10,000 adults 70 years of age or older (mean age, 75) who lived independently and had no history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or dementia.
