Patients with epilepsy typically continue their antiseizure medications (ASMs) during pregnancy, but some ASMs have been linked to major congenital malformations, neurodevelopmental disorders, and low birth weight. To compare fetal growth outcomes across ASM regimens, researchers analyzed prospective international registry data from nearly 16,000 pregnancies exposed to ASMs.
Infants exposed to ASM polytherapy had significantly lower birth weight percentiles and a higher risk of being small for gestational age (SGA) than those exposed to monotherapy.
