The 7-day risk for cerebral vascular accident (CVA) after a transient ischemic attack has been reported as approximately 10%. Identifying TIA patients who are at higher risk for CVA, and would thus benefit most from emergent admission and evaluation, is a challenge. These authors developed and validated a score for predicting CVA within 7 days after TIA.
The score was derived in a population-based cohort of 209 patients with probable or definite TIA and was validated in a similar cohort of 190 patients. A six-point “A, B, C, D” score was derived from the following variables:
Age: ≥60 years = 1 point
Blood pressure: systolic >140 mm Hg and/or diastolic ≥90 mm Hg = 1 point
