The 2005 London terrorist bombings represent the largest mass casualty event in England since World War II. Researchers retrospectively analyzed the prehospital response and activities at one academic trauma center.
Nineteen doctors, 8 paramedics, 101 ambulances, and 25 fast response units were deployed to the scene. All communications between the hospital and the scene failed. Overall, 775 people were injured and 56 people died, 53 at the scene. None of the three inhospital deaths (massive torso hemorrhage, traumatic arrest en route to the hospital, and severe traumatic brain injury) was deemed preventable.
