Controversy exists as to whether the stability of pelvic fractures is correlated with mortality. In a prospective study of 100 consecutive patients, researchers in the United Arab Emirates used a modified Tile classification to categorize pelvic fractures as stable (including isolated acetabular fracture) in 63 cases, rotationally unstable in 19, and both rotationally and vertically unstable in 18.
Motor vehicle crash was the most common mechanism of injury (77%), followed by falls (19%). Mean patient age was 31 years (range, 3–73), and 77% were male.
