Of the estimated 1 million people living with HIV in the U.S., up to one quarter are unaware of their infection. Recent advances in antiviral therapy have made early detection and treatment even more important because it not only limits spread of disease but also significantly improves morbidity and mortality. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, also pose public health problems and cause major complications if left untreated.
