The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis is a longitudinal epidemiologic cohort study that is investigating measures of subclinical atherosclerosis in 3213 men and 3601 women without cardiovascular disease. In the current study, investigators evaluated the prognostic importance of coronary artery calcium in the group of 2684 nondiabetic women younger than 79 who were classified as low risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), based on the Framingham risk score. Study participants underwent coronary computed tomography angiography and were followed for the presence of CHD and other vascular events (e.g., stroke) for up to 2000 days (mean, 3.75 years).
