The Cobra Perilaryngeal Airway (PLA) is a single-use extraglottic device for adults and children that was introduced in 2003. Investigators randomized 200 pediatric patients (age, ≤12 years) to ventilation with either a Cobra PLA or a Laryngeal Mask Airway Unique (LMAU) during elective general anesthesia of less than 2 hours duration. Device size was selected according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The study was supported by the manufacturer of the Cobra PLA.
Placement was successful on the first attempt in 95% of PLA patients and in 96% of LMAU patients. In the remaining patients, devices were successfully placed on the second or third attempt. Time to insertion and ease of insertion were comparable for the two devices. The PLA and LM…
