d-dimer assay is a commonly ordered screening test for patients with suspected pulmonary embolism (PE) who do not have high pretest probability. Researchers at a single tertiary care center in Canada retrospectively reviewed a random sample of 100 medical records from all 760 patients who had SimpliRED d-dimer assays performed during a 3-month period to determine whether pretest probability was documented and whether clinical management decisions based on test results were consistent with current recommendations. Three records were excluded because patients underwent d-dimer testing for reasons unrelated to venous thromboembolism.
