Previous studies indicate that moderate-to-heavy alcohol consumption is associated with the development of incident atrial fibrillation (AF) in men, but the studies included too few women to determine whether this association also applies to women. These authors prospectively examined the association in 34,715 participants (age, ≥45) in the Women’s Health Study who had no history of AF. Women were followed from 1993 to 2006. Alcohol consumption was self-reported by questionnaire at baseline and at 4 years; one drink was defined as 12 ounces of beer, 4 ounces of wine, or one shot of liquor.
