Failure to diagnose pancreatic injury, especially pancreatic ductal injury, can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. In a retrospective multicenter study, researchers evaluated the accuracy of 16-slice and 64-slice multidetector computed tomography (CT) for detecting pancreatic injuries and pancreatic ductal injuries.
Two hundred six patients (89% with blunt trauma) who underwent preoperative CT (16-slice, 153 patients; 64-slice, 53 patients) followed by laparotomy that confirmed pancreatic injuries were enrolled at 20 trauma centers; 71 patients also had pancreatic ductal injuries.
